Curriculum Coherence

Achieving curriculum coherence and equity for all requires districts to evaluate current instructional approaches, available resources, and assessments in order to ensure alignment with the Michigan K-12 Standards for English Language Arts. According to McRel (2017), a guaranteed and viable curriculum is “often defined as a mechanism through which all students have an equal opportunity (time and access) to learn rigorous content.” Districts may find themselves in different places according to the continuum illustrated below. These layers represent the recursive process districts use to establish and maintain curriculum coherence, and as shown, ongoing communication and professional learning are essential components in this process. As districts determine which layer represents their current work, the following pages will guide them by providing pertinent resources.
